About MongoDB

MongoDB is a document-oriented database program, and also the name of the company behind it. Its development began in 2007 at the American company 10gen as part of a planned platform-as-a-service product, and it was first released on 11 February 2009. 10gen was renamed MongoDB Inc. in 2013.

The company went public on Nasdaq on 20 October 2017 as MDB, at $24 per share. In November 2018 the database changed its licence from AGPL 3.0 to the Server Side Public License (SSPL), which the Open Source Initiative said in January 2021 is not an open-source licence. Its managed cloud service, Atlas, launched in 2016 and made up about 70 percent of revenue by 2024.
