About Columbia Pictures

Columbia Pictures is a Hollywood film studio founded on 19 June 1918 in New York City as Cohn-Brandt-Cohn (CBC) Film Sales Corporation by Harry Cohn, Jack Cohn and Joe Brandt. It adopted the name Columbia Pictures on 10 January 1924.

The studio belongs to Sony Pictures, part of Sony Group Corporation. Coca-Cola owned it from 1982, and Sony bought it in 1989.

The Columbia Pictures Logo: Design and Meaning

The logo on this page is the studio's name in tall, squared capitals, stacked on two lines, beside a framed picture of its famous figure: a robed woman standing on steps and holding a torch above her head, with clouds behind her. Known as the Torch Lady, she represents Columbia, the personification of the United States.

Wikipedia says the figure has been redrawn through about six major changes. In 1924 she appeared as a female Roman soldier with a shield and a wheat stalk, modelled on the actress Doris Doscher. In 1928 two versions followed, one with a radiate crown and the slogan "Gems of the Screen". The current print version dates from 1993, and a new motion logo was introduced in 2024 for the studio's centennial and first shown with the re-release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
