About East Java Province

East Java is a province on the eastern part of the island of Java, with Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, as its capital. Its coat of arms has been used since 1966, and with its motto since 1974, on provincial government buildings, documents and official events.

The East Java Province Logo: Design and Meaning

The arms are a shield on a five-sided base, divided into blue and gold. At the centre stands the Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlawan) of Surabaya between the halves of a temple gate, in front of a black volcano giving off white smoke. The monument honours the people of East Java who fought in the war of independence, the volcano stands for the drive towards a just and prosperous society, and the temple gate for the ideals of the struggle past and present. A gold star at the top stands for belief in God, and blue and white waves below for the region's rivers and fertile land.

The shield is flanked by 17 rice grains and 8 cotton blossoms, for food and clothing; green cogwheels and a gold chain beneath stand for strength and development. The ribbon carries the province name and the Javanese motto "Jer Basuki Mawa Beya", meaning that success requires sacrifice.
