About West Java Province
West Java is Indonesia's most populous province, with Bandung as its capital and the Sundanese as its largest ethnic group. Its coat of arms, in use since 1961, appears on provincial government buildings, documents and official events and is widely searched for school work and local designs.
The West Java Province Logo: Design and Meaning
The arms are an egg-shaped shield with a ribbon at the bottom. At the centre stands a kujang, the traditional Sundanese blade; its five holes stand for Pancasila. To the left is a stalk of rice with 17 grains and to the right a stalk of cotton with 8 blossoms, standing for food and clothing and, through their numbers, for 17 August, the date of Indonesia's proclamation of independence. Below are the province's mountains, rivers and canals for farming, rice fields and plantations, and a dam for irrigation, with the Jatiluhur reservoir as the example.
The colours carry meaning too: green for the fertility of the land, yellow for nobility and wealth, black for steadfastness, blue for peace, red for courage and white for purity. The motto "Gemah Ripah Repeh Rapih" is Sundanese: gemah ripah means prosperous and fertile, and repeh rapih means peaceful and harmonious.
