About Jakarta Province
Jakarta is Indonesia's largest city and has long been its capital, governed as a province-level special region, Daerah Khusus Jakarta. Its official coat of arms, shown on this page, appears on government buildings, documents, uniforms and the city's official communications.
The arms were set by Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 6 of 1963, and the version in use today dates from 15 July 1964. Before that the city used the arms of colonial Batavia (until 1951) and a separate post-independence design from 1951 to 1963. A short-lived 1963 version with the old spelling "DJAJA RAJA" was never really used.
The Jakarta Province Logo: Design and Meaning
The coat of arms is a five-sided shield, a shape that stands for Pancasila. At its centre is the National Monument (Monas), the city's landmark, standing for greatness and fighting spirit. It is flanked by a stalk of rice and a branch of cotton tied together with a golden ribbon: rice and cotton together stand for prosperity, food and clothing for the people. A gate behind the monument represents Jakarta as the country's main door to the world, and the white waves at the bottom show that it is a coastal port city.
Across the top runs the motto "Jaya Raya" in red, meaning great and glorious. The colours are part of the meaning: gold for nobility, red for heroism, white for purity, green and white in the cotton for prosperity and justice, and blue for the open sky. Note that Jakarta also uses a separate tourism and city-branding mark, "Jakarta, a city of collaboration"; the coat of arms here is the official emblem of the regional government.
